State your hypothesis, tying your project back to the impact it might have.

Hypothesis: By implementing a system that allows email newsletters to also be posted as articles or websites, we will expand the size of the audience reading those newsletters -- both getting more readers on the web, and creating more opportunities for readers to discover and subscribe to those newsletters in their inbox. We would also free up staff time, resulting in more job satisfaction and possibly less burn out (or more opportunities for other tasks) for the people currently duplicating efforts with Superabundant.

Which metrics would you use to track the success of this project? We will use this as the foundation of our experiment design. (Optional)
  1. Track traffic to First Look web articles and Superabundant newsletter articles.

  2. Track subscriptions and click through rates of First Look and Superabundant email newsletters.

  3. Talk to people involved in production of each about the ease or difficulties of creating this work and gather their qualitative feedback about how that has changed.

What problem are we trying to solve for our communities with this experiment? How might it help us better serve them?

A couple problems: Some people don't want any more emails but would enjoy reading the results of our email newsletters. (I know I click on the NYT push alert many mornings to read the "Your Daily Rotation" article that a lot of people subscribe to in their emails, even though I don't read many of the newsletters I subscribe to in my inbox).

Separately: We publish Superabundant as an article every week, and the workflow of producing it in two places seems quite burdensome on staff time. With the staffing we have now, trying the same thing with six-days-a-week First Look seems completely out of reach.

Could we explore a unified solution for email (probably a challenge for the email product team) that also simplifies the work of feeding email newsletters into web articles or web pages (which intersects with the web/app team's work)?

This could result in better audience service by expanding the reach of First Look to web audiences, who can only get it in their inboxes how, and also improve the quality of work-life for OPB staff, by lessening the burden of creating two versions of Superabundant every week. It might also set up better workflow processes for the long run as we think about adding other newsletters that we want our web/app users to be able to easily access.

Lay out the potential project steps to the best of your ability, including key teams that would need to be consulted. This is your best knowledge of the systems, tools and lift that would be required.

I suspect the email product team would likely take the lead to start, exploring email platforms that meet email needs while also offering solutions that could export data usable as web articles.

Once one or more tools are identified, the web product team could engage in the side of this project associated with web article production, curation, etc.
