State your hypothesis, tying your project back to the impact it might have.

By implementing A/B testing capabilities, we hypothesize that we can identify optimal user experiences that resonate most effectively with our audience. This research aims to improve key performance metrics such as conversion rates, engagement metrics, and revenue generation by systematically testing and optimizing various elements of our digital platforms. Ultimately, this initiative supports our business goals of enhancing audience engagement, driving user retention, and maximizing revenue potential through data-driven optimization strategies.

Which metrics would you use to track the success of this project? We will use this as the foundation of our experiment design. (Optional)
  • Conversion rate: Measure the percentage of users who take a desired action (e.g., sign up for a newsletter, become a member) relative to the total number of visitors, indicating the effectiveness of website optimization efforts in driving user engagement and conversions.

  • Engagement metrics: Track metrics such as bounce rate, time spent on site, and pages per session to assess the impact of A/B testing on user engagement and content consumption behavior.

  • Revenue impact: Monitor the impact of A/B testing on revenue generation metrics such as advertising revenue and membership conversions.

What problem are we trying to solve for our communities with this experiment? How might it help us better serve them?

Implementing A/B testing capabilities enables us to adopt a data-driven approach to website optimization. By continuously testing and iterating on different elements of our website, we can identify areas for improvement and make incremental changes that lead to a better overall user experience, ultimately enhancing our ability to serve our audiences and bring them into the fold of our mission.

Lay out the potential project steps to the best of your ability, including key teams that would need to be consulted. This is your best knowledge of the systems, tools and lift that would be required.

Define objectives with stakeholders across all departments: Identify business goals to inform A/B testing strategies, focusing on areas such as conversion optimization, user experience enhancement, and revenue generation. Suggested capabilities from evolve documentation:

  • Establish an A/B testing process for design changes, allowing us to test different design elements, layouts, and visual elements to optimize user experience and effectiveness.

  • Implement an A/B testing framework specifically for call-to-action buttons, enabling us to optimize their design, placement, and messaging to maximize conversions.

  • Enhance testing capabilities for all messaging, including email campaigns, notifications, and on-site messaging, to optimize their effectiveness in driving user actions and engagement.

  • Expand testing capabilities beyond editorial elements to include other aspects of our digital presence, such as user interfaces, navigation menus, and interactive elements.

  • Expand testing capabilities to assess the impact of time-specific content updates or membership pushes on user engagement and conversion rates.

  • Develop ability to test different homepage design elements such as layout, navigation, visual hierarchy and content presentation to identify the most effective design that resonates with our audience and drives desired actions, such as article clicks, newsletter sign-ups.

Evaluate resources and needs with partners across all departments: Assess current testing, learning, and iteration capabilities across the organization, including processes, tools, and resources available. Identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement in existing testing practices and capabilities.

Select testing tools: Evaluate and select A/B testing tools and platforms that align with our technical requirements, scalability needs, and budget constraints, ensuring compatibility with existing systems and workflows. Potentially, develop and implement an A/B testing solution for our content management system (CMS), enabling us to experiment with different content variations and measure their impact on user engagement and conversion rates.

Develop testing framework: Establish a testing framework and methodology, including hypothesis formulation, experiment design, sample size determination, and statistical analysis procedures, to ensure robust and reliable testing outcomes.

Implement testing infrastructure: Set up testing infrastructure within our digital platforms, integrating A/B testing tools and scripts to enable experimentation across various website elements, content modules, and user interfaces.

Conduct test experiments: Design and execute A/B tests to compare different variants of website elements (e.g., headlines, calls-to-action, layout designs) and content strategies, monitoring performance metrics to evaluate the impact of changes on user behavior and engagement.

Analyze test results: Analyze test results and statistical significance to identify winning variants and actionable insights, documenting findings and recommendations for further optimization efforts.

Iterate and refine: Based on test outcomes and insights gained, iterate and refine website elements, content strategies, and user experiences to continuously improve performance and achieve desired business outcomes.

Scale testing efforts: Expand A/B testing efforts to cover additional areas of our digital platforms, scaling testing initiatives to include more complex experiments, multivariate testing, and personalized content variations to maximize optimization opportunities.

Establish testing culture: Foster a culture of experimentation and data-driven decision-making across teams, providing training and resources to empower stakeholders to conduct tests autonomously and contribute to ongoing optimization efforts.

From way back in the day, here is a list of needs that Development captured related to testing. By no means comprehensive, but somewhere to start. https://docs.google.com/document/d/11K8CX3B_vhe2uuBdO15XCjqQSE2LJqTBEo8k2UYod2g/edit?tab=t.0

Does the tool being explored also have editorial A/B testing as a feature, or would testing of best headline, best photo, etc, need to be done through a different product pitch / different process?

Margaux and Membership met to discuss the possibilities for this tool. We are putting together a vendor scoping document to assess how we move forward and would like platform team input on that.

I love that this looks at both editorial and non-editorial use cases. I know Arc has said there are some AB test capabilities through the CMS itself (perhaps at a cost, as an add on), but I don't know if those capabilities meet our needs and priorities. It might be worth exploring.
