Exploring opportunities for improved in-article story presentations will lead to higher user engagement, increased content consumption, and improved reader satisfaction. By adopting innovative and user-centric approaches to story presentation, we anticipate capturing and retaining reader interest more effectively. Ultimately, we hope to drive revenue through increased site traffic and user satisfaction.

Which metrics would you use to track the success of this project? We will use this as the foundation of our experiment design. (Optional)
  • Time spent on page: Measure the average amount of time users spend engaging with in-article stories, indicating the level of reader interest and engagement.

  • Scroll depth: Evaluate how far users scroll down in articles, indicating their level of interest and engagement with the content.

  • Interaction rate: Track the frequency of user interactions with interactive multimedia elements or dynamic story presentations within articles.

  • Unique users: Monitor the number of users visiting articles featuring improved story presentations, indicating the effectiveness of the enhancements in attracting audience attention and driving site traffic.

What problem are we trying to solve for our communities with this experiment? How might it help us better serve them?

By exploring innovative ways to present stories within articles, we can capture users' attention and encourage them to spend more time exploring and interacting with our content. We can also provide additional context and insights that enhance users' comprehension of information.

Lay out the potential project steps to the best of your ability, including key teams that would need to be consulted. This is your best knowledge of the systems, tools and lift that would be required.

Identify opportunities and brainstorm ideas: Collaborate with stakeholders to brainstorm concepts for enhancing story presentations within articles, focusing on user needs and engagement, visual appeal, scalability and integration with our technology stack.

What types of stories do we anticipate doing or have we done with interactive or data components, and what types of solutions are we looking for? What are some common use cases we can repurpose?

Items to discuss as suggested by team:

  • Do we need additional data viz solutions, or is that solved by Flourish and Datawrapper? Items suggested were charts, maps, timelines, interactive graphics.

  • Adding vertical timelines for stories

  • More breakout box and sidebar options

  • More options to break up the text in-article

  • Story presentation options that don't require HTML or digital programming knowledge

  • Using innovative in-article tools that increase audience interactivity

  • Option to embed interactives in-article

Collaborate with technical teams: Work with technical teams to implement approved enhancements to in-article story presentations, ensuring compatibility across devices and platforms and adherence to accessibility standards.

Prototype solutions: Develop prototypes or mockups of proposed story presentation enhancements, ensuring compatibility across devices and platforms and adherence to accessibility standards.

Gather feedback: Solicit feedback from internal stakeholders and target audiences through user testing, surveys, or focus groups to evaluate the effectiveness and appeal of prototype solutions.

Iterate and refine: Based on feedback and insights, iterate prototype solutions, refining design elements, functionality, and user interaction to improve user experience and internal processes.

Launch and monitor performance: Continuously monitor the performance of articles featuring improved story presentations, tracking key metrics to assess the impact of the enhancements on user engagement and content consumption.
