State your hypothesis, tying your project back to the impact it might have.

By implementing a transparent, cross-functional, and organizationally inclusive product prioritization system, we hypothesize that we will see a significant improvement in the alignment of our product development efforts with the needs and priorities of our audiences. This alignment will lead to more impactful and user-centered products, resulting in increased user satisfaction, engagement, and retention.

Which metrics would you use to track the success of this project? We will use this as the foundation of our experiment design. (Optional)

Measurable results:

  • Increase cross-departmental project involvement by x% within [timeframe].

  • Measure by tracking # of projects with # of team members from different functions/departments.

  • Achieve y% improvement in team satisfaction scores related to cross-functional collaboration and ownership by [timeframe].

  • Measure through internal surveys comparing starting point survey results with end point results using the same questions.

  • Conduct z cross-functional workshops/trainings/brainstorming sessions within [timeframe] to encourage shared responsibility and input.

  • Measure through surveys/feedback loops, diversity of attendance rate, implementation of ideas, follow-up on idea progress, etc

What problem are we trying to solve for our communities with this experiment? How might it help us better serve them?

Without a clear and cross-functional system in place, decisions regarding which features or projects to prioritize may be made in silos or without considering the perspectives and needs of various teams or stakeholders within the organization. The problems we solve for our audiences are multidisciplinary. Since no audience needs exist in an igloo, communication and collaboration between teams means our products better represent the needs of those who we serve.

Lay out the potential project steps to the best of your ability, including key teams that would need to be consulted. This is your best knowledge of the systems, tools and lift that would be required.

Define goals and objectives: Identify specific objectives for the system, such as enhancing transparency, promoting cross-functional collaboration, and incorporating diverse perspectives.

Stakeholder analysis: Identify all relevant stakeholders involved in the product development process, including representatives from each department or product. Understand the priorities, pain points, and perspectives of each stakeholder group through interviews.

Develop prioritization framework: Define criteria for evaluating and prioritizing product features or projects, considering factors such as user impact, strategic alignment, technical feasibility, and resource constraints.

Implement tools and processes: Select or develop tools and processes to support the prioritization framework, such as project management software, collaboration platforms, or decision-making templates. Ensure that these tools and processes are accessible and user-friendly for all stakeholders, regardless of their role or level of expertise.

Pilot test: Conduct a pilot test of the prioritization system with a small group of stakeholders to gather feedback and identify any areas for improvement. Iterate on the system based on the feedback received, making adjustments as necessary to address concerns or optimize usability.

Training and onboarding: Provide training and onboarding sessions to familiarize stakeholders with the new prioritization system and tools. Communicate the rationale behind the changes and the expected benefits for both individual contributors and the organization as a whole.

Rollout and scaling: Roll out the prioritization system to the broader organization, ensuring that all relevant stakeholders are informed and engaged in the process. Monitor adoption and usage of the system, providing ongoing support and training as needed.

Evaluation and iteration: Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of the prioritization system in achieving its goals and objectives. Solicit feedback from stakeholders on their experiences with the system and use this feedback to iterate and improve over time.

Continuous improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement by regularly reviewing and refining the prioritization process based on lessons learned, changes in organizational priorities, and evolving user needs.
